... a little more action!
andy wingo,
luis villa,
havoc pennington,
calum benson,
jono bacon,
alberto ruiz,
mikkel kamstrup,
rodney dawes,
richard hughes,
lucas rocha,
thomas thurman,
owen williams,
christian schaller,
vincent untz... they all talk about it (and i'm sure i leave people behind), and in general all of them agree. there is a need for change.
the desktop metaphor is obsolete. the objectives behind gnome 2.0 have been fulfilled, but they don't represent anymore the modern desktop needs. the gui as we know it, needs to be redone. there is a need for a new cool generation of visionaire objectives (as the old ones once were).
there already are
ideas, i.e. topaz, and most of this ideas came in the wrong time, when there were no infraestructures to embrace them. now there are:
clutter,
compiz,
cairo,
pyro,
telepathy, etc. what is needed, is action. plus new brainstorm sandboxes are proposed (by owen williams).
as calum benson portrays, we have to stop using this new technologies to mimic and follow behind other developments, we need to unleash their full potential, take benefit of the great community and push them to a higher level, where closed source can't reach.
the desktop only has 3 limitations: the 2 dimension nature of application windows (which eventhough clutter can change, a transition needs to be made), the 2 dimension nature of the screen (which compiz has showed us doesn't limit the desktop), and the operating system nature alberto ruiz points out (which web 3.0, packagekit and metadata developments, like music players, show us can be abstracted).
so... where are the limitations? in the project and not in the technology.
gnome needs a group of pioneers into the 3.0 world. brave people that are willing to lead, code, and experiment towards new ideas and metaphors in the desktop...
i'm in :)
pd: the blog posts thread is getting very complex and hard to track (thanks kamstrup). I propose to move the conversation to a better medium (but not stop making it public through our blogs). gnome 3 mailing list? let's sail with this new breeze of change in the air, and not let it go to waste.
hmmm... probably it's time to join planet gnome.
