basic networking everywhere

dear lazyweb,

after watching people use smartphones: blackberries, nokias, iphones, and even eee's for basic networking everywhere. i have decided to jump into the mobile train myself. but i can't decide.

i want to do basic networking 24/7: web browsing, email, im/irc, gps/google maps, etc

the open source alternatives are few and the data packages are expensive. blackberries have a great independant network and good basic functionality/usability but no freedom for the geeky. iphones have a great community but too restrictive and dear. no products with ubuntu mobile yet? i thought this was the platform linux was going to kill the competition.

the flaw of 3g is that it's expensive and country limited (i move a lot between spain and ireland, and every now and then conferences in other countries). the blackberry network is cheap and global, but not that fast.

so, lazyweb, what are your opinions and suggestions?

i've been enjoying mixxx for some time now. mixx is a free, open source dj software that gives you everything you need to perform live mixes.

but i very recently got all the setup: turntable, midi dj mixer, second sound card, timecode vinyl; and it is amazing! i'm mixing all my music through my digital copies using free software and a turntable and mixer as interfaces (i only look to the screen to select tracks). the warm feel and control of analog media with the power of digital. i'm ecstatic! :) and getting back into mixing, becoming the libre modern human orchestra, live dj/vj set all with free software.

pictures and mixes to come soon :P

“for 3 years, you youtubers have been ripping us off, taking tens of thousands of our videos and putting them up on youtube...” amazing comedy group monty python now have their own official youtube channel. the channel aims to collect better organized, higher quality videos – like of the hilarious bicycle repairman – than what was previously posted to the site.

it is great that the genius monty python (visionary as always) embrace and not fear the new media technology. they drove comedy to where it is, let's hope they drive comedy media to where it should be.

the word "meh" has just made it into the collins english dictionary.

there is nothing meh about the journey of the latest entry in the dictionary. rather, it illustrates how email and the internet are creating language.

Find the fifth sentence:

When a thread enters the real-time scheduling class, the real-time scheduling class module is loaded automatically.

Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.

Don’t dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.

since this thread catched me at work the closest book was very geeky. at home it would've been different.
how math unraveled the 'hard day's night' mystery
the intro chord to the beatles' classic has always had an impossible sound: there were allegedly no overdubs, but definitely more notes than john, paul, and george could've played. professor brown of dalhousie university cracked the chord recently, and it only took him six months and crazy mathematical techniques. the answer? ...

read about it and listen to the cord in the original article at wired. found in stereogum.
