i'm doing all my instant messaging/irc with
quassel... and i'm loving it.
quassel is a distributed irc client, meaning that one (or multiple) client(s) can attach to and detach from a central core that stays permanently online. like the usual combination of screen and irssi/weechat but graphical. reattaching your client will show you the session like you left it before (plus whatever happened meanwhile in your favorite channels or whoever talked to you), making communicating with the internet people while moving from home to work, from work to home, to the cafeteria, to your friends house... seamless and painfree.
if you add
bitlbee to quassel, you can do all your chit chatting with this running session to which you connect and disconnect easily. bitlbee brings instant messaging to irc clients, it tunnels instant messaging traffic (jabber and all major protocols) to a virtual irc channel and virtual irc queries.
no more "connection reset by
peer"
