apple, give me my freedom back!

not too long ago I updated my ipod nano to an ipod classic, with the idea of upgrading my experience with 40 times more storage. i have already blogged how i loved using free software to run my portable audio device. to my discontent, apple had changed so much the hardware in their badly names "classic", the rockbox people would have to start the port as if it were a totally new player. which is a lot of work, and they won't be doing.

so, i am forced to use the native firmware encumbered database which only supports unfree formats (mp3 and apple lossless) and hides the files. one down for freedom haters.

i won't let the battle finish this quickly and i start using in a day to day basis libgtkpod (thanks to the developers that broke the hash key apple placed to block free usage of this product with apps other that itunes), at least i'm going to push my music in with free software. after getting all my record collection to the moment in, i'm happy, but this doesn't last much. i start trying to add the records i am buying frequently, and fails arrive. music and covers disappear sometimes when i try to update the database.

apple, i love your hardware, and that's what i bought, hardware. but i hate how you take away my freedom, forcing me to firmwares, that force me to unfree formats and syncing with unfree software. is being able to manage a portable audio player like a hard drive and browsing music through directories containing ogg or flac files that much to ask for?

apple, give me my freedom back!

Heh, no, it's one package that you agreed to when you bought it. Too bad!

If you want to change something, give your money to companies that get it right!

This is really bad for ordinary consumers, but you should probably have known better. Also, don't say 'is this too much to ask for', when that is not what you asked it at the time that it really mattered: when you paid the money... Sorry for preaching!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh! It never ceases to amaze me how young punks like you always want to change rules. The world OWES you something. You bought it knowing the rules but now you don't like it. GROW UP! Next time be more careful how you spend your money. My guess is that you won't, and you'll be back crying again...

I have this problem too - with the Creative Zen Vision:M.
Never say never though, my player's port was in a state where no-one thought it could be done.

And from my experiences in the world of free software can't/won't doesn't happen :)

Apple, in its' effort to create a seamless, end-to-end user experience, has always operated in the manner you're complaining about. This has been their behavior since their inception. Long before the iPod, Apple has always maintained control over user experience.
The real solution is, and always has been, if you do not like the way Apple maintains control over user experience....don't buy Apple products. Millions of consumer make choices to buy products from other manufacturers every quarter. You have, and always have had, the same option.
If they have not change their behavior in over 30 years, do you really think your pleading going to make them start now?

Let's see, I'll buy their product and then blog slightly annoyed about how it isn't what I wanted. That'll show them!

* Sigh *

Another sad day for freedom.

have to love the apple fanboys.

apple focuses in the end-to-end user experience?
that's why they added a checksum to the database to restrict software that isn't itunes. that's why they push the drm so much.

they hate freedom more and more everyday.

this wasn't like this before. my ipod nano worked without hash keys, and i used rockbox with no problem on it. i run ubuntu and opensolaris in a macbook, and helping users i notice each release being more difficult to have setup.

ironic when you think about the mac os x being a bsd with their desktop ontop. they grabbed the free bsd kernel, made a product out of it and won't even release the drivers of their own hardware to give back to the freedom community.

and yes... i should've checked, and known before i spent my money. but being idiotic sometimes doesn't deprive my right of critizing things that i believe wrong.

http://www.cowonglobal.com/ . While I support the idea of hacking hardware to do what you want, sometimes buying hardware that does what you want out of the box is the better move. Especially when the hardware you are trying to hack is produced by a company that has at virtually every opportunity attempted to stymie openness, unless it is to their benefit.

Well it is not like you haven't been warned. You bought hardware you know who cause trouble with Linux and Free Software. Instead of complaining, why not having bought something else. Apple is hostile, why shall you fund them.

Apple is all about restricting freedoms .. do you think they supported RockBox?? .. get real and just DO NOT buy their hardware.

You should grow up and spend your money more wisely OR stop complaining. It just makes you look as uninformed as all the other Apple fanboys.
Support anti-DRM and open standards companies. Buy generic and open hardware. Just act like a educated free software loving adult. Think about it.
Your money has a lot of power. Spend it on good things and educate people.

I might add that this has particular relevance in Canada.

Indeed luis -- you purchased a piece of _hardware_ legally. What is interesting here is that by bypassing the software locks in an iPod to use it, you would be a criminal under the proposed bill C-61 here in Canada.

If you think you can help, please lend your help to us. If Canada falls to this ignorant bill thanks largely to a 'keep-the-peasants-stupid' approach that Apple and MS are peddling every day, other countries will fall as the weight gets heavier.

Great post luis. I would also agree with the posts that suggest that we hurt Apple with pocketbooks. Apple is no better, and in many respects _worse_ than MS. And yet the underdog is being ushered into the very same powerful role...

Sad that we don't learn from history.

You toss around the fanboy insult if you, it just show's your immaturity. Acknowledging that Apple is behaving as it always does and has, hardly makes me a "fanboy".
If you are one that complains about products not being to your liking consistently, and I acknowledge that fact, does that make me luisbg fanboy? Should I be surprised the next time you whine?
Past behavior is indicative of future behavior may be like. If expect something different, who's the being unrealistic.
BTW, Apple is not pushing the DRM. The record labels are and you know this. Apple proposed the no DRM's long before the record labels decided to try and break iTunes dominance by making DRM free tracks available to ever other music download service but iTunes.
I'm not attempting to defend Apples' practices. I'm just being honest about behavior that they don't even attempt to hide. Might help your frustrations to do the same.
